OUR TOP 5 SUMMER MOVIE OBSESSIONs
By Robere Lett | Publisher | Style Editor
Every year we get obsessed with the state of the movie industry and trying to predict what the hottest movie of each season will be, this year is no exception to that rule, summer has always been the optimal time for launching big films. Big budget productions that for the last several years has been dictated by the “Superhero” movies. Never a big comic book fan, even though I did love the fashion sense of Betty & Veronica or the mischievous Jose and the Pussycats, I guess flying crime fighters just wasn’t my thing.
Now with every Marvel and DC comic book coming to life in one shape or another, it has become the filmmaker's anthem. Are we turning a corner on the genre and moving to another platform? The Biopic has been a huge Oscar buzz and revenue builder for the studios. Great films like Rocketman the Biopic of Elton John and Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, And Vile the Ted Bundy drama are playing heavily off last years Oscar winner Bohemian Rhapsody. These films seem to become a mantra for storytelling while digging into the lives of current and past personalities. Our list of summer films hits several genres; superheroes, spin-offs, frat humor and of course Disney.
The much-anticipated release of the live animation retooling of this classic is causing waves across the globe. With Beyoncé and Donald Glover at the helm followed by an all-star cast can hardly miss as box office gold. Video courtesy of https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7TavVZMewpY
Tarantino is back, this time his all-star roster of A-listers Brad Pitt, Leonardo DiCaprio, Margot Robbie, Al Pacino, Damian Lewis, Bruce Dern, Luke Perry, Dakota Fanning, Timothy Olyphant, and James Marsden are wrapped up in a cinematic love feast swirling around the 1969 Manson Murders and death of Sharon Tate, told as only Tarantino can… filled detailed 60’s nostalgia it’s a throwback tale at its best. The teaming of larger than life characters The Rock and Jason Statham, both known for their massive ego-stroking as modern-day gladiators with a spin-off from the Fast and Furious franchise. Hobbs & Shaw has this pair seamlessly taking down armies while taking shots at each other. This tried and true format has one-upped the game with the addition of a fan-favorite Idris Elba as the ultimate baddie. How can you lose with this trio of all-star muscle and manic testosterone! Scarier and darker than most of the mutant movies, The New Mutants adaptation from the X-Men comics series focuses on young teens as they come to terms with their newfound and dangerous powers. As of this writing we have learned that due to a power dynamic within the production determining just how dark and scary this film would be has created another setback as the film originally scheduled for 2018 and early 2019 but has been pushed back twice already, we now hear that it will be released on April 3, 2020, of course, that remains to be seen but we can at least enjoy the trailer for now. When you have to confirm your age to view a trailer one must wonder how a seemly harmless image of three young boys looking up needs to have a parental block to view it. Such was the case when I went to check out the Good Boys trailer. A comic turn by producer Seth Rogen explaining to the young cast that they are not old enough to view the movie trailer sets the tone. What happens is a series of high-level F-bombs and lots of sexual references with a porno nature. Definitely not for kids and maybe many adults, the genre is not new or necessarily shocking. We have the Superbad and Sausage Party films that have contributed to the frat party mentality, but it just seems to get younger and younger. This trio of sixth graders on a quest to learn how to properly kiss a girl seems they get them more sex education than they bargained for. Video courtesy of http://www.goodboysmovie.com
