Five Questions with Celebrity Esthetician Meredith Yochum

Q.  What inspired you to become so passionate about skincare?

A.  I had the normal breakouts like everyone does growing up, but in my mid 20’s I started getting hormonal cystic acne. It went on for years. It got so bad sometimes I didn’t want to go anywhere because I was embarrassed and no amount of makeup could hide it. I would pick at it and make things worse. I bought and tried just about every product line out there, but nothing seemed to work.  By my mother’s suggestion, I went and got my first facial from a local day spa. The esthetician there treated me so well and gave me advice on how to better manage my problematic skin. It was definitely the start of me wanting to know and do more about my own skin so I could be in a better place about it and in turn with myself. I enrolled in a skin program with Dermalogica through the School of Paul Mitchell. I STILL had skin problems through the entire program. It took me time to learn how to better my skin. The passion kept developing and even more every year since then.

Q.   What is an Esthetician and what can they do?

A.   An Esthetician is someone licensed, educated, and trained in the arts or science of skin. So it’s really an umbrella for many routes one can choose to make a career of. For me, I am focused more on the science of skin and how to help people manage their own skin for better results and self confidence. Helping people look and feel their best.

Q.   What’s your secret when meeting with new clients and keeping your clients happy?

A.   Having that connection with clients is key. My clients are so diverse in all aspects!! I make sure to cater to them all. The proper communication on what it is they want and need and what it is I can deliver for them along with educating them has worked well for me.

Q.  What’s your skin philosophy for your clients & how do you help them achieve it?

A.   Have a daily routine! Invest in products to use at home that cater to your skins needs and of course see me for your facials/treatments as scheduled every month for stronger maintenance.

Q.  What’s the one skin rule that you stress and think is the most important for you clients to follow?

A.   SPF!!! everyday! No matter how light or dark your skin is. It’s major to “control” as much as you can. It saves you from more problems like sun damage, acne scarring, pigment problems, and so much more that could come along the way.
